Everything you need to understand MAP, read the report, and see exactly how your child is growing — all in one place.
A quick overview of the test, what it measures, and why we use it.
MAP Growth (Measures of Academic Progress) is an adaptive assessment developed by NWEA, a nonprofit research organization used by millions of students across more than 10,000 schools and districts nationwide. Alpha Anywhere uses MAP Growth as one of our key tools for understanding where your child is academically and tracking their progress over time.
Unlike a traditional test where every student gets the same questions, MAP Growth is adaptive. When your child answers correctly, the next question gets slightly harder. When they answer incorrectly, it gets slightly easier. The test narrows in on your child's precise level of understanding, much like a doctor adjusting a vision prescription until the picture is clear.
Up to four subjects: Mathematics, Reading, English Language Arts, and Science. Students at Knowledge Grade 2 and below typically test Math and Reading only. English Language Arts and Science are added on a per-subject basis beginning at Knowledge Grade 3 in that subject. If you see "---" on the report, that subject was not tested for your child's knowledge grade.
Results are reported as a RIT score (Rasch Unit). The RIT scale is stable and equal-interval, like inches on a ruler. A score of 200 means the same difficulty whether your child is in 2nd or 7th grade. Scores typically range from 130 to 300 across K-12.
Because the test adapts, it measures what your child actually knows regardless of grade level. A 4th grader performing at a 6th grade level gets 6th grade questions. A 5th grader who needs support gets questions that pinpoint exactly where.
MAP Growth is a precise, adaptive measure of academic level and growth. MAP Growth is not an IQ test, a pass/fail exam, or a complete picture of your child as a learner. It is one important data point among many.
Your child's MAP Growth report is published in Dash, our parent portal. Here is how to access it:
You will see a set of screenshots for each subject your child was tested in, typically three pages per subject. The following steps walk you through what each section of those pages means.
How Alpha Anywhere students performed on MAP Growth, Winter 2025-26.
Every subject exceeded our 2X commitment this testing window.
Students who work with a Breakthrough Coach outperform their peers by 20% on MAP Growth. Coaching works because it targets the daily habits that drive results: time on task, mastery completion, and learning from mistakes. A coach does not replace the curriculum. They make the curriculum work harder by ensuring your child is using their study time effectively and building the discipline that sustains growth over time.
Alpha Anywhere is the only virtual, self-paced program in the 2 Hour Learning family of 20+ programs. We all use MAP Growth, the same nationally normed assessment, which means results are directly comparable across every program in the network.
This winter, Alpha Anywhere students grew at over 3X the nationally projected rate across all subjects. Across the full 2 Hour Learning family of programs, Alpha Anywhere ranked among the top performers overall.
Growth comparisons are based on MAP Growth data from the Winter 2025-26 testing window across all programs in the 2 Hour Learning family administering the same NWEA assessment.
Dear Families,
In 1 year, your children took Alpha Anywhere from a 1.1X beta result to 3.0X+ overall growth. That is their accomplishment. They showed up every day, did the work, and earned these results.
Our proudest moment this testing window was Reading. Across the program, students achieved over 3.0X growth in Reading, with several kids learning at 10X or above. We believe deeply that success in reading creates a halo effect across every other subject, and watching your children prove that out has been extraordinary.
Enabling results like these is why this program exists. We built Alpha Anywhere so that every child could access this kind of growth, and your families are showing what is possible.
The next MAP Growth testing window will be in late May 2026. Between now and then, the most impactful thing your family can do is maintain the daily routine: consistent time on task, weekly mastery goals, and engagement with your Pulse Reports. We are committed to reaching even higher together.
Thank you for trusting us with your children's education, and thank you to every student who put in the work to make this happen.
How was the MAP testing experience for your family? We would love to hear from you.
