What is MAP Growth?

A quick overview of the test, what it measures, and why we use it.

MAP Growth (Measures of Academic Progress) is an adaptive assessment developed by NWEA, a nonprofit research organization used by millions of students across more than 10,000 schools and districts nationwide. Alpha Anywhere uses MAP Growth as one of our key tools for understanding where your child is academically and tracking their progress over time.

How the Test Works

Unlike a traditional test where every student gets the same questions, MAP Growth is adaptive. When your child answers correctly, the next question gets slightly harder. When they answer incorrectly, it gets slightly easier. The test narrows in on your child's precise level of understanding, much like a doctor adjusting a vision prescription until the picture is clear.

📊

Subjects Tested

Up to four subjects: Mathematics, Reading, English Language Arts, and Science. Students at Knowledge Grade 2 and below typically test Math and Reading only. English Language Arts and Science are added on a per-subject basis beginning at Knowledge Grade 3 in that subject. If you see "---" on the report, that subject was not tested for your child's knowledge grade.

📏

The RIT Score

Results are reported as a RIT score (Rasch Unit). The RIT scale is stable and equal-interval, like inches on a ruler. A score of 200 means the same difficulty whether your child is in 2nd or 7th grade. Scores typically range from 130 to 300 across K-12.

🎯

Grade-Independent

Because the test adapts, it measures what your child actually knows regardless of grade level. A 4th grader performing at a 6th grade level gets 6th grade questions. A 5th grader who needs support gets questions that pinpoint exactly where.

ℹ️

What It Is and Isn't

MAP Growth is a precise, adaptive measure of academic level and growth. MAP Growth is not an IQ test, a pass/fail exam, or a complete picture of your child as a learner. It is one important data point among many.

The Breakthrough Coaching Effect

+20%
stronger growth results with a Breakthrough Coach

Students who work with a Breakthrough Coach outperform their peers by 20% on MAP Growth. Coaching works because it targets the daily habits that drive results: time on task, mastery completion, and learning from mistakes. A coach does not replace the curriculum. They make the curriculum work harder by ensuring your child is using their study time effectively and building the discipline that sustains growth over time.

How We Compare

Alpha Anywhere is the only virtual, self-paced program in the 2 Hour Learning family of 20+ programs. We all use MAP Growth, the same nationally normed assessment, which means results are directly comparable across every program in the network.

Alpha Anywhere Overall Growth
3.0X+
National projection = 1.0X

This winter, Alpha Anywhere students grew at over 3X the nationally projected rate across all subjects. Across the full 2 Hour Learning family of programs, Alpha Anywhere ranked among the top performers overall.

CEO, Alpha Anywhere

Dear Families,

In 1 year, your children took Alpha Anywhere from a 1.1X beta result to 3.0X+ overall growth. That is their accomplishment. They showed up every day, did the work, and earned these results.

Our proudest moment this testing window was Reading. Across the program, students achieved over 3.0X growth in Reading, with several kids learning at 10X or above. We believe deeply that success in reading creates a halo effect across every other subject, and watching your children prove that out has been extraordinary.

Enabling results like these is why this program exists. We built Alpha Anywhere so that every child could access this kind of growth, and your families are showing what is possible.

The next MAP Growth testing window will be in late May 2026. Between now and then, the most impactful thing your family can do is maintain the daily routine: consistent time on task, weekly mastery goals, and engagement with your Pulse Reports. We are committed to reaching even higher together.

Thank you for trusting us with your children's education, and thank you to every student who put in the work to make this happen.

Help & FAQ

Common questions about MAP Growth results and what to do next.

My child's percentile dropped from the last test. Should I be worried?
Not necessarily. Percentiles compare your child to national norms at a specific point in the year. Small percentile shifts (5-10 points) are normal fluctuations. Look at the RIT score itself. If it went up, your child learned more content, even if the percentile shifted slightly. The growth percentile is a better indicator of whether your child is progressing well.
My child's RIT score seems low for their grade. What does this mean?
RIT scores span a wide range within any grade level. A score below the national median does not mean your child is failing. It means there is an opportunity to target specific skills. The growth data (for returning students) will tell you whether your child is on an upward trajectory.
Why does my child not have growth data?
Growth requires at least two MAP Growth test events. If this was your child's first test with us, or if they transferred from a school that did not use MAP, there will be no growth data yet. It will appear after the next testing window.
Why does my child only have two subjects on their report?
Students at Knowledge Grade 2 or below are typically tested in Mathematics and Reading only. English Language Arts and Science are added on a per-subject basis beginning at Knowledge Grade 3. If you see "---" next to those subjects, this is expected for your child's knowledge grade.
Can I compare my child's scores to their siblings or classmates?
We strongly encourage focusing on your child's individual trajectory rather than comparing across students. Each child's learning path is unique. The most useful comparison is your child's current performance versus their own prior performance.
What about retesting? Can my child retake the test?
Yes. Alpha Anywhere allows up to one retest per subject per testing window. We proactively recommend retesting when results do not appear aligned with expected performance, for example if testing conditions, illness, or technical issues may have affected the outcome. If a retest is recommended for your child, your coach will let you know.
What does the 2x growth commitment mean?
At Alpha Anywhere, we aim for your child to grow at twice the rate that NWEA projects based on national norms. You can check this on your child's report by dividing Observed Growth by Projected Growth. A result of 2.0 means your child grew at exactly twice the expected rate.
